Unai Emery's 'perfect' whirlwind thrilled Villa fans against Brighton
"You've seen the Villa, now fuck off home."
I've heard that more than once this season, and we're not out of September yet - and now it's Brighton & Hove Albion who are being serenaded up from their seats, down the vomitory and out into Witton.
Unai Emery's Villans have made it ten wins at home in the Premier League on the bounce (only the 9th team in history to pull that out the bag), they've risen above the darlings of Brighton (early days yet on the table front though) and they made a huge statement win in front of the cameras.
I can't take anything away from them, at all. There's zero criticism I have to offer them - constructive or otherwise.
There are certain things that almost won't allow me to call it the perfect game - Unai Emery still finding time to rant and rave on the sidelines at sloppy play in such a win stands out - but Villa were complete. They barely seemed to slip up a gear the entire match, it was far too comfortable.
And I guess that's the point. The man, the MR, who lives and breathes football, who watches dozens and dozens of fixtures to keep up with trends and standards. Of course we look like we're hardly working (the only giveaway to the actual amount of application is the godawful sweaty shirt) - I doubt many Villa players actually have to think about what they are doing due to the influence of Emery and his coaching staff. They are stepping up from the foundation of Dean Smith and 'be a good teammate' - Villa's play is moving far beyond that into the high-level automations of the elite at points. It's football without thought, but with a hell of a lot of care.
Maybe there's a point there about how strong our first XI is, and why we can look so poor when we're fighting to chase games - Legia Warsaw and Everton stand out there. Perhaps everything is so well drilled and seamless for the starting XI that even minor changes to it for the sake of rotation becoming a little jarring. When things go right in the gameplan, Villa are a cut above.
And a clear cut-above a team who are doing very similar things in their own stylish way. Roberto De Zerbi and Brighton deserve all the plaudits, but I'm waiting for Villa's now. The classy Seagulls were eaten alive in the Lion's den. Their free-flowing tactics played straight into the hands of an especially springy Villa.
Standing tall above it all - in front of the eyes of England manager Gareth Southgate - were Ollie Watkins ('the man who can't finish' who has endured listening to scraping-the-barrel level criticism) and Ezri Konsa (who nobody outside of Villa ever seems to notice).
Hear them well. Konsa made Lewis Dunk hold his beer. Ollie Watkins scored three and wanted more. With Konsa at the back, Brighton's menace dulled. With Watkins in attack, Villa had a near constant piston-pumping machine threat.
Emery won't call it perfect. It probably didn't tick every single nerdy box. But it was 6-1, at home, against strong opposition.
Call it perfect.
